The Invitation
The Invitation is set in the fictional country of Anacadair. When we meet Millie, she is fifteen and living with her parents, Rush and Thea, as well as her sister and brothers. Millie is approaching the sixteenth anniversary of her birth, which is a significant milestone in Anacadair, marking the end of school and the move from childhood to adulthood. She plans to meet friends, including Yan, the boy she is in love with, to celebrate the end of school and her anniversary.The day before her sixteenth anniversary, Millie receives a mysterious Invitation that sets in motion events that change the lives of Millie and her family. Although Millie is the first person we meet, the lives of two others are changed dramatically as events unfold.The governing body of Anacadair is the High Council. We discover a darker undercurrent within the High Council as the story progresses. How far will the High Council go to preserve the old ways?Deeply buried secrets threaten the family in ways they could never have imagined, and they must flee for their lives. Will Millie see Yan again, and will the family escape the watchers pursuing them?

About Clare Fryer
Clare grew up in Guildford surrounded by books. Her father was a poet and author who inspired her to write. She began doodling poetry in her teens and loved writing stories at school. She continued to doodle poetry throughout her life, although yearned to write novels but never had the time. When not reading, Clare enjoys gardening, crochet and cross-stitch and always has several projects on the go.
In 2022, Clare took early retirement and finally had time to realise her dream. The Invitation began as a short story inspired by a writing prompt. It won the monthly writing competition in her creative writing group. Clare’s mother and several friends asked what happened next, and so she began to write the rest. That short story became the first three chapters of this book. Clare has always been curious about the stories hidden behind the veneer of normality, whether created by culture or something more sinister.Clare and her husband David have been married for over 30 years. They have two children who are both married, and a delightful granddaughter. Clare and David now enjoy time together with their beautiful Burmese cats, Rosie Posie and Poppy.
